In the fall of 2021, we noticed that our website was a bit sluggish. After a closer look, we realized that our website was under a massive DDoS attack. There were over 500,000 unique compromised (hacked) computers attacking our website concurrently. This attack wasted over half a terabyte of data per day per data center! Luckily, our company has been running some of the most popular websites on the Internet for almost 20 years and we have seen it all — massive DDoS and dictionary attacks, IP theft, exploits, and fishing. We were able to mitigate the attack using the tools that we had developed for ourselves.
A few days after the attack, we spoke with the owner of one of the data centers. He was impressed by how we handled the DDoS attack and told us he — and all his clients — are in a constant struggle with the bad actors and would greatly benefit from the same type of protection.
